Antonio Conte drops Tottenham transfer hint ahead of summer window

Antonio Conte has dropped a major hint over Tottenham’s transfer plans going forward.

The hint came about when the Italian was discussing Harry Kane. The striker is back to his best under Conte and is chipping in with both goals and assists.

Kane’s latest display during Tottenham’s 5-1 hammering of Newcastle last weekend even saw him compared to the late, great Diego Maradona.

This led to Conte being asked about Kane and Maradona in a recent press conference.

When Conte was asked who he would rather mark, Kane or Maradona, he not only stated that he had indeed marked the latter but hinted that he wants to bring another No.10 to Spurs to help Kane out:

“I tell you one thing that is very curious. When I was playing with Lecce and [Zbigniew] Boniek was the manager, my role was No.4, to mark man to man the No.10. I was lucky, or maybe not lucky, to mark Maradona when Napoli played Lecce,” he said.

“We lost 3-2 but I scored! My first goal in Serie A. When I was only 19 years old! It was the last season for Diego in Naples but for sure this game is impressed in my mind because I marked him and I scored. I was very happy, despite the defeat.

“They are two different players, honestly. Maradona was a No.10, not a No.9. Harry, he was born a striker, however he has the talent and quality to play like a No.10 with another striker in front of him, but I like to have him as a striker and then eventually another No.10. Two different players with different characteristics.”

Where do Tottenham need to strengthen?

Whilst a no.10 could help Spurs out as they do not currently have anyone who can fill that role naturally, it is clear the Lilywhites need to improve in other areas.

Kane could really do with some back-up at centre-forward, which he has not had for several years.

Elsewhere, though Cristian Romero and even Eric Dier have looked sharp of late, Spurs also probably need some more quality at centre-back.
