Date for Scotland’s World Cup playoff with Ukraine set

Scotland will play their postponed play off World Cup semi-final against Ukraine on Wednesday 1st June, with the winner in action against Wales four days later to book the final European place in the World Cup finals.

The game was initially due to be played in March, but was postponed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022.

And now, it will take place at Hampden Park at the beginning of June, with Wales waiting in the wings for the winner having seen off Austria in the second semi-final of their pot.

The winner from the three sides will join England, USA and Iran in Group B for the tournament in Qatar, which begins in November and runs until December 18th.

What they said

Speaking to BBC Sport, Scottish FA Chief Executive Ian Maxwell spoke of the excitement for the clash, and the wider context against which it is set.

‘Firstly, it will be great to be able to welcome to Ukraine to Hampden Park in June’, he said. ‘While, understandably, there will be two sets of competitive players who are committed to taking another step closer to World Cup qualification, we also understand and appreciate the wider context in which the match will take place.’

‘We have been consistent throughout that postponing the original tie was the right and only thing to do and look forward to hosting Ukraine at Hampden Park in June.’
