Manchester United to face competition in pursuit of central defender

A number of European clubs look to be doing battle for Ajax central defender, Justin Timber.

Timber is currently being managed by Erik den Hag in the Dutch capital. However, recent reports have suggested that the central defender is one of the players Ten Hag would look to bring to Old Trafford should he become their permanent boss this summer.

Now though, fresh reports this week claim that Chelsea are also interested in the young defender, with Manchester United and Arsenal too named as interested parties.

And whilst they are not mentioned in the above-linked report, Timber himself has previously suggested he would be open to a Manchester City move:

Timber’s Ajax stint

But just who is Justin Timber, the man every top English club appears to have some interest in?

Timber has spent the last eight years plying his trade in Amsterdam with Ajax.

The 20-year-old joined the Dutch powerhouse’s youth ranks back in 2014, departing fellow Eredivisie side, Feyenoord.

Timber would enjoy several successful years with Ajax’s youth sides and is a Dutch under-17 champion.

However, despite still only being 20, Timber is becoming a key cog in Ajax’s senior side.

The central defender really burst into the first-team during the 2020/21 campaign, when he would feature 20 times in the league and five times in the Europa League for Ajax.

He has also managed to maintain his starting berth for the current season, playing 37 games across all competitions to date.

As well as becoming a key figure in Ajax’s backline, Timber has also earned six senior Netherlands caps since his debut last year.
