Police to quiz Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo over ‘alleged assault’

Merseyside police are investigating an incident involving Cristiano Ronaldo following the end of Manchester United’s meeting with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday April 9th, according to reports.

As per the Telegraph, Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a police investigation over an ‘alleged assault’ as he left the pitch following Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat at Everton.

It is added that Merseyside Police confirmed that they have been liaising with the two clubs after video footage emerged of him appearing to hit a phone out of the hand of a young fan.

In a statement issued to Telegraph Sport, Merseyside Police confirmed an assault allegation:

“We are liaising with Manchester United Football Club and Everton FC following reports of an alleged assault at the Everton v Manchester United football match,” said a spokesperson.

“As players were leaving the pitch at 2.30pm it was reported that a boy was assaulted by one of the away team as they left the pitch. Inquiries are underway and officers are currently working with Everton Football club to review CCTV footage and are carrying out extensive witness enquiries to establish if an offence has taken place.”

Elsewhere, Ronaldo took to social media on Saturday evening to apologise for what he called an ‘outburst’.

Manchester United’s top-four hopes up in smoke

Saturday’s 1-0 loss at the hands of Everton effectively ended United’s already small hopes of earning a Champions League spot this season.

The Red Devils are now 7th in the Premier League, six points adrift of 4th-place Tottenham with just seven games left to play.

Everton, meanwhile, have moved four points clear of the relegation zone, though Burnley do have a game in hand on the Toffees.
