What angry Thomas Tuchel said about referee after Chelsea’s Champions League exit

Thomas Tuchel has expressed his anger at the referee who officiated Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Despite winning the match, Chelsea still lost the tie on aggregate and are now, of course, out of the Champions League.

Szymon Marciniak was the referee for the second leg and he, along with VAR, made a number of questionable decisions on the day, which included not awarding Chelsea a penalty early in the second 45 after Kai Havertz had been tripped by Casemiro.

Although, whilst the ref did seem to favour Madrid on the night, Chelsea’s second goal did look to come from a corner that probably shouldn’t have been a corner.

Tuchel unhappy with ref

Regardless, Thomas Tuchel was not too happy with Marciniak post-match.

However, it did not appear to be for his officiating on the day, but rather his actions towards Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti right after the full-time whistle:

“I was disappointed that the referee had a good time with my colleague, Carlo Ancelotti,” Tuchel said. “I know Carlo is a gentleman and a nice guy, but when I wanted to go and say thank you for the match, I saw him smiling and laughing loudly with the opponents’ coach.

“I think this is the very, very wrong time to do this after a final whistle and 126 minutes where one team gave all their hearts and fought until the last drop. You go and see the referee smiling and laughing with the other coach. I think it is very, very bad timing. I told him this, and that’s it.”
